Netflix’s next genre-bending series, starring Toni Collette and Taskmaster’s Mae Martin, has finally set a premiere date, set for this fall, after months of keeping fans in suspense. Titled Wayward, the eight-episode series marks Collette’s highly anticipated return to the horrorverse after Ari Aster’s critically acclaimed Hereditary. It is created by Martin, who is widely known for winning Season 15 of Taskmaster and receiving a BAFTA nomination for their work on the Channel 4/Netflix comedy series Feel Good.
As announced on Thursday, July 31, Wayward will debut on Netflix on Thursday, September 25. The streamer also released a teaser, giving a glimpse at Collette’s chilling role as the series whisks you to Tall Pines, “a bucolic town with secrets that are anything but pretty.” In addition to creating and starring in the drama, Martin is the co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Ryan Scott.
In Wayward, Collette portrays Evelyn Wade, who is seen in the sneak peek below saying to a seemingly troubled teenager in quite a disturbing tone, “Welcome to Tall Pines. We think you’ll be very happy here.” Given her previous horror role in Hereditary, of course, fans can expect nothing brief of extraordinary in the upcoming series. The Oscar nominee played the miniature artist Annie Graham in the 2018 psychological horror film, which marked Aster’s feature directorial debut and became A24’s highest-grossing film at the time.
‘Wayward’ Focuses on The Troubles of Adolescence
As teased by Netflix, Wayward explores the sinister secrets that lurk behind every closed door in the picture-perfect town of Tall Pines. Soon after police officer Alex Dempsey (Martin) moves with wife Laura (Sarah Gadon) to that town, he connects with two students, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) from the local school headed by Collette’s character and for “troubled teens” who are desperate to escape and unearth everything rotten in the town. Other stars attached to Wayward are Patrick J. Adams, Brandon Jay McLaren, Tattiawna Jones, Isolde Ardies, Joshua Close, and Patrick Gallagher, among others.
