Chris Bryant has moved on from his role as the UK government’s minister of state for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), with former Scotland secretary Ian Murray taking over the post.

Well-liked by many in the innovative industries for his extemporaneous style, Bryant is now minister for international trade and economic security at the Department for Business and Trade. It follows a reshuffle of top government posts by prime minister Keir Starmer at the weekend following the resignation of deputy prime minister and housing secretary Angela Rayner.

Lisa Nandy, who has remained in position as culture secretary, has been speaking in front of the culture, media and sport committee today (September 10).

Nandy reassured the committee that commitments outlined by Bryant will not fall by the wayside, such as his promise that film and TV tax credits “always have to be kept under review”.

Murray also becomes minister for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, taking over from Bryant, who held both posts since Labour’s election win last July.

“It’s been a great joy to work with the creative industries, arts, tourism, museums, telecoms, data, space and digital inclusion sectors for the last fourteen months,” Bryant posted on X. He also responded to one comment on the platform to clarify: “It’s not a demotion.”
