Wolf Man: A Refreshing Take on Toxic Masculinity and the Dissolution of the Family Unit
Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man is set to be a thrilling horror movie that reimagines Universal’s 1941 lycanthropic creature feature as a commentary on toxic masculinity and the dissolution of the family unit. The film, which stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, boasts a tagline that reads: "What if someone you loved became something else?"
A Super Fresh Take on the Wolf Man Mythos
Whannell is no stranger to reimagining classic horror tales. His 2020 film, The Invisible Man, was a commentary on the horrors of gaslighting, and he’s now retooling the Wolf Man franchise to explore the dangers of toxic masculinity. The film follows Blake (Abbott), a San Francisco husband and father who inherits a remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his father goes missing.
A Horror Movie Barbed with Body Horror Elements
The stage is set for a tightly coiled tale of tension and paranoia as Blake, his wife Charlotte (Garner), and their young daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) are attacked by an unseen animal and forced to barricade themselves inside their home. As the night wears on, Blake begins to transform into something unrecognizable, leaving Charlotte to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.
Official Synopsis
Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Garner), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger. But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.
