“I studied all the legendary fights! Ali.” “What do you know about Ali?” Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for a sports drama called Uppercut, opening in delayed February next year. This is a German production made by a German filmmaker and starring a German actress though it’s also an English-language film set in the world of boxing. The film focuses on Toni, a determined female boxer, trying to break down barriers as she redefines what it means to be a woman in today’s world. When Elliott, a tough ex-boxing champion, accepts the challenge to train Toni, the two mismatched characters form an unlikely alliance. Starring Luiii (aka Luise Grossmann) as Toni, Ving Rhames, Jordan E. Cooper, Joanna Cassidy, Scott Monahan, Andrew Ibach, and Lynn Favin. This is the director’s third time telling this story – he made the German version Leberhaken in 2021, then “Uppercut: the still version” in 2023, and now this English version telling the story of Toni and Elliott. The dialogue is cheesy and doesn’t really work – the rest of the film looks okay.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Torsten Ruether’s film Uppercut, direct from YouTube:

Ving Rhames and Luise Grossmann star in an electrifying film about Toni, a determined female boxer, trying to break down barriers as she redefines what it means to be a woman today. When Elliott (Ving), a tough ex-boxing champion, accepts the challenge to train Toni (Luiii), these two mismatched characters form an unlikely alliance. Their sparring and Elliott’s keen insights show the resilient newborn fighter that real strength comes from the challenges you overcome when life throws its biggest punches your way. Uppercut is both written and directed by German writer / filmmaker Torsten Rüther, director of the film Leberhaken previously, who has remade his own film three times now. It’s produced by Matthew Berkowitz, Josef Brandmaier, Steve B. Castor, Luise Großmann, Jim Rygiel, and Torsten Ruether. Lionsgate will debut Ruether’s Uppercut in select US theaters + on VOD starting February 28th, 2025 early next year. Good?
