Let’s be candid: if you didn’t see Weapons this weekend, you missed out. Zach Cregger’s hugely buzzy second feature earned rave reviews and massive hype ahead of its launch on Friday, and all weekend film-centric social media was chatting about Weapons, Weapons, and more Weapons. That excitement wasn’t just confined to the digital realm – Cregger’s film was a huge box office hit to boot, earning $70 million worldwide in a major win for original horror cinema.
The film pulled in over $42 million at the US box office, and elsewhere around the world earned an additional $27.5 million – that’s even higher than the similarly impressive global debut for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which arrived to $63.5 million. (However, Sinners opened bigger than Weapons in the US, earning $48 million.) Both films stand as major 2025 debuts for entirely original features, with no IP or sequel basis. With a reported $38 million budget, Weapons stands in great stead financially – and with audience reactions seeming largely positive, expect it to keep pulling in the punters over the coming weeks.
Since Creggers’ debut Barbarian made $45 million across its entire theatrical run, Weapons is proving to be a sizeable leap for a filmmaker with plenty of promise. Stay tuned for whatever horrors he prepares to deliver next, in his upcoming Resident Evil film.
