Fans of both And Just Like That… and Sex and the City are in mourning, as the Carrie Bradshaw cinematic universe is about to come to an abrupt and definitive end. But even as the HBO Max sequel wraps up, it’s still got a few surprises. Last week’s episode introduced a character played by Ella Stiller—daughter of Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor—Mia, a teenage woman who accidentally got pregnant by Brady Hobbes (Niall Cunningham), son of Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda. Nixon and Stiller share a hilarious scene in which Miranda stalks Mia to the salon where she works, awkwardly confronting her about her relationship with Brady.

Even though the series has made a few major plot stumbles—such as killing off the father of Nicole Ari Parker’s Lisa Todd Wexley not once, but twice—in its own way, it also has an amusing sort of internal consistency. Ella Stiller’s real-life grandmother, the slow Anne Meara, also appeared in the Sex and the City universe as Mary Brady—mother of Miranda’s ex-husband, Steve (David Eigenberg). That means the younger Stiller is functionally playing her actual grandmother’s step-granddaughter.

Ben Stiller explained last November to E! News how it feels to see his children continue the family legacy. “Both my kids are actors, and not really kids anymore,” he said. “And they’re both really good, so it’d be fun to work with them. I have done a couple of little things with them, but I’d love to. It’d be really fun.” Would Stiller, currently the director and executive producer of the acclaimed series Severance, hope to share screen time with them? Actually, no. “I think eventually they’ll probably be directing and producing stuff that I’ll be asking them to cast me in,” he told the outlet. “That’s how it goes.”

We don’t know yet whether Ella Stiller will appear in the show’s last two episodes, which air this week and next week. But either way, her first appearance on the series will be tough to forget.
