In the last few years, the zombie subgenre has captured fans’ attention unlike any other. The language of survival and primal fear is universal, cutting across age or geography, and it’s the secret sauce of zombie movies’ success worldwide. The resurgence of the 28 Days Later franchise with 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple is a testament to fans’ love for the genre, along with the popularity of shows like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead.

Among these notable titles is Brad Pitt’s World War Z, which has earned cult classic status in the 13 years since its initial release. The film follows Pitt as a former United Nations investigator, Gerry Lane. When the world is plagued by a mysterious infection, turning the human population into rampaging, mindless zombies, Lane is persuaded to go on a mission to investigate this disease. What follows is a perilous trek around the world where Lane must brave horrific dangers and impossible odds to find answers before human civilization falls.

Inspired by the 2006 novel by Max Brooks, the film stayed in development hell for years, but when it hit theaters, it broke out with a vengeance. World War Z emerged as a box office hit, earning $540 million worldwide on a $190 million budget. The 67% Rotten Tomatoes-rated feature was praised for Pitt’s grounded, understated performance, playing a vulnerable father who relies on human intellect, pattern recognition, and observation to survive. Often praised for redefining the scale of the Zombie genre, the Marc Forster-directed film has emerged as a fan-favorite cult classic in the past decade. So, back in April, Paramount announced that the long-anticipated sequel was finally in development, and now fans are returning to the original feature.

‘World War Z’ Hits New Streaming Milestone

World War Z has spent over 285 days on Paramount+’s top 10 streaming charts, as per FlixPatrol. It amounts to approximately nine months in a year. With spooky season going on, more and more fans would like to revisit the feature, adding more days to this total in the coming months. Currently, the film is sitting at the fifth spot on Paramount’s top 10 global list, sharing the space with Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, Diablo, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, Scream 7, One Mile franchise, and more. Further, the Apple TV Store saw the movie spend over 75 days on its charts this year.
