EXCLUSIVE: Renate Reinsve has joined Alexander Payne’s first European feature, which has been titled Somewhere Out There and is prepping for an early 2026 shoot in Denmark.

Reinsve will play a supporting role in the Danish-language film, which will be set in Denmark. Erlend Loe has written the screenplay, based on Ake Sandgren’s original idea.

Birgitte Skov will produce the film for Denmark’s Scanbox Production, with plot details still under wraps.

“Given Denmark’s rich cinematic history stretching back to the silent era, I feel privileged to direct a Danish movie, and I hope I can serve Erlend Loe’s terrific screenplay,” said Payne.

Somewhere Out There is co-produced by Norway’s Hummel Film Sweden’s Nordic Drama Queens and France’s Maneki Films. Financing and additional casting are underway, with a scheduled completion date of spring 2027.

Scanbox Entertainment will distribute in the Nordics. Scanbox is owned by European studio Vuelta, which unites leading local distribution and production companies within one firm. Payne revealed first details of the film to Screen last year.

“As longtime admirers of Alexander Payne’s films, it goes without saying that we are incredibly proud and honored to be, respectively, writing the screenplay for and producing his first European feature,” said a statement from Skov and Loe.

“Two and a half years ago, we were presented with a wonderful idea for a film conceived by Swedish Åke Sandgren – but we lacked a director. We took a chance and reached for the stars. Erlend’s strong connection to Payne sparked an inspiring dialogue about the project, which we have since developed together into a Danish feature film. We are immensely excited for the next chapter.”

Having won best actress at Cannes 2021 for The Worst Person In The World, Reinsve is back in Competition next week in Sentimental Value, also directed by Joachim Trier.

Payne was last in Cannes in 2013 with Competition title Nebraska; while he served on the Competition jury in 2012, and was president of the Un Certain Regard jury in 2005.
