Host Wendy Mitchell speaks to Screen’s senior international critic Wendy Ide and senior US critic Tim Grierson to discuss the films from this year’s festival that didn’t come away with any prizes, and that they feel deserve more attention.

Among Ide’s picks are Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Competition title The Beloved, which left Cannes empty-handed despite what many viewed as a career-best performance from Javier Bardem, and Rudi Rosenberg’s Un Certain Regard title Words Of Love, starring Hafsia Herzi as a single mother trying to get by with a teenage daughter, her rambunctious little brother and a cheese-loving dog.

Words Of Love is quite social realist, but it’s also absolutely hilarious. It’s so well-written and the kids are fantastic… Plus, there’s a great dog,” says Ide.

Grierson’s selections include Laszlo Nemes’ Moulin, which also departed Cannes without any nods from the Competition jury. Gilles Lellouche stars in this true story about French Resistance hero Jean Moulin, with Grierson calling the film “stirring and upsetting in all the right ways”.

The Screen Podcast is produced by Ellie Calnan, with Wendy Mitchell serving as editorial director. New episodes every Thursday.
