The Red Sea International Film Festival’s market has solidified its reputation as a key meeting place for Saudi and international industry executives looking to tap into the rapidly expanding Saudi film market.
From December 2-5, the Souk brought together major players in the Saudi film industry, attracting a growing number of industry accreditation and exhibitors. Despite regional conflicts and schedule changes, the Souk saw a significant increase in interest and participation.
Film Clinic co-founder Mohamed Hefzy praised the quality of projects and the strong international presence at the Souk, highlighting it as a crucial source of financing for independent Arab cinema. Other notable attendees included Eagle Pictures founder Tarak Ben Ammar, AGC Studios founder Stuart Ford, and Mubi CEO Efe Cakarel, who expressed optimism about the potential of the Saudi film industry to become a major player in the global market.
While there are opportunities for growth and development in the Saudi film industry, executives are also keen to understand the challenges, such as accessing tax credits, navigating legal and business affairs, and building local production teams. Despite these obstacles, there is confidence in the industry’s potential, thanks to support from government organizations and film funds.
The festival showcased eight Saudi films, including well-received titles like Naga, Norah, and Mandoob, demonstrating the progress made by Saudi filmmakers in a relatively short period. The Red Sea Foundation has played a significant role in nurturing Saudi talent, providing funding, mentorship, and market access to emerging filmmakers.
With Hollywood stars making appearances at the festival, including Johnny Depp, Zoe Saldana, and Will Smith, the Red Sea International Film Festival has quickly established itself as a prominent event on the international film calendar. The festival’s move to a new venue in 2024 near the historic Al Balad neighborhood of Jeddah signals its continued growth and ambition for the future.
