Daniel Dae Kim is about to return to television, but instead of ruling over the warmongering Fire Nation, he’ll be seeking a second chance. Prime Video just released the official trailer for its upcoming spy thriller, Butterfly, an adaptation of the BOOM! Studios graphic novel series from Arash Amel starring Kim as U.S. intelligence operative David Jung. He lived under the radar in South Korea until the ghosts of his past came back to haunt him. A sinister spy organization called Caddis orders a sociopathic teenage deep cover agent named Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) to deal with him until they finally meet and discover a connection that hearkens back to a fateful decision made by David years ago.

The footage opens with Rebecca closing in on her target when David reveals himself, and she realizes that he’s her long-lost father. Butterfly will dig into the intricate family dynamics between the two following their reunion, with Rebecca wrestling with how to treat her dad after he faked his death years ago, and David desperately trying to keep her off the same path of international espionage he followed. Unsurprisingly, she’s none too pleased that he abandoned her as a child, even if he swears it was for her own good. All the catching up and reconciliation have to be put on hold, though, as Caddis arranges to eliminate both of them because they know too much. David was once a member of the organization until his “death,” which then allowed its leader to take Rebecca under her wing and turn her into its most valuable asset. Their only hope of being free and being a family again is taking down the woman at the top, which will be easier said than done.

While Kim’s David tries to make the most of his second chance at being a father, he and Rebecca will also be thrown into some high-octane spy action. The trailer is packed with some stylish action sequences and daring setpieces, showing that, although he’s “died” once, the skilled operative isn’t exactly basic to kill. Joining in the fun with Kim and Hardesty as series regulars will be Yellowstone‘s Piper Perabo and Rivals star Louis Landau. Recurring cast members, meanwhile, will include Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim, with Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa set as guests.

‘Butterfly’ Unites a Diverse Team of Acclaimed Creatives

Butterfly has assembled a robust team to bring Amel’s comic to life. Ken Woodruff, known for his work as a producer on The Mentalist, Gotham, and, most recently, La Brea, serves as showrunner and co-created the series with acclaimed novelist Steph Cha, best known for her series of books following the detective Juniper Song. The series also had Kitao Sakurai, the director of the upcoming Street Fighter movie, on board to direct the first two episodes of its six-episode run. Kim has previously described it as a dream project of his for uniting American and Korean creatives and “bridging” the two cultures, and Prime Video may be the perfect home for it, given their stellar track record of comic adaptations like The Boys and Invincible.

Butterfly premieres on Prime Video on August 13. Check out the trailer in the player above.
