Just last month, we brought you the unexpected news that Aaron Sorkin is gearing up to write and direct a sequel to his and David Fincher’s Oscar winning Facebook film _The Social_Network. Now, as the wheels start turning on The Social Network Part II, THR is reporting that Sorkin and the folks over at Sony have already fired out a couple of friend requests for potential leads — and some pretty high calibre ones at that. Per THR, newly Academy Award winning Anora actor Mikey Madison and The Bear‘s talismanic lead Jeremy Allen White have both been approached to front Sorkin’s social media exposé follow-up.

Though THR‘s sources stress that no firm offers are on the table just yet for The Social Network Part II (the movie is very much still at the ‘in development’ stage), word on the street is that things are moving rapid as Sony looks to capitalise on the buzz surrounding the project. As you’ll doubtless recall, David Fincher’s three-time Oscar-winning The Social Network covered the founding of Facebook and the making of history’s then-youngest ever billionaire, Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg). Part II then is set to see Sorkin dive into Facebook’s continuing impact on society in the years since the first movie, using the revelatory findings presented in The Wall Street Journal‘s 2021 ‘Facebook Files‘ to look at how the social media giant’s awareness of and complicity in disseminating harmful content — from unsettling imagery targeted towards vulnerable teens, to incitements to violence in lesser economically developed countries, to FB’s role in the 6 January Capitol Insurrection.

The current understanding is that, should Madison and White close deals to star in The Social Network Part II, the former would be taking on the role of Frances Hagen, the data engineer-turned-whistleblower who first leaked the Facebook Files to The Wall Street Journal, while the latter would be playing Jeff Horwitz, the WSJ tech reporter who actually broke the story. What’s more, insiders currently have the tone of the sequel pitched somewhere between Michael Mann’s devastating tobacco industry thriller The Insider and Tom McCarthy’s also-devastating 2015 offering Spotlight — so probably don’t expect too many laughs here, then. Still, with two acting heavyweights circling the leads, Sorkin back back back, and no shortage of meaty material to get stuck into here, The Social Network Part II is getting all the heart reacts from us so far — stay tuned for more updates!
