EXCLUSIVE: Icarus Films Films has acquired North American rights to Juanjo Pereira’s Under The Flags, The Sun that premiered at this year’s Berlinale in Panorama Dokumente.

The film examines the fall of Alfredo Stroessner’s 35-year dictatorship in the South American country in 1989, marking the end of one of the world’s longest authoritarian regimes.

The filmmakers accessed a trove of unseen and long-forgotten footage crafted to shape a national identity and celebrate the regime. They included newsreels, propaganda, and declassified documents recovered from Paraguay and abroad revealing the Cold War power structures that maintained Stroessner’s reign.

Under The Flags, The Sun has also screened at Sheffield Doc Fest and Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and next month will receive its North American premiere at Camden International Film Festival and screen at AFI Latin American Film Festival.

Pereira, Ivana Urizar, Gabriela Sabaté, Paula Zyngierman, and Leandro Listorti served as producers, alongside executive producer James Costa.

Cinephil represented the filmmakers in the deal.
