Wednesday Season 2 returns with its second and final part in less than a month. The final four episodes of the sophomore season of the Jenna Ortega-led series hits Netflix on September 3. Just a week after the first four episodes hit the streamer, skyrocketing the show to number 1 on the Netflix Top 10, a trailer for the second half of the season has dropped. Where things left off, Wednesday was gravely wounded, but given that the show is called Wednesday, even if she died, her death is likely momentary. That’s confirmed by the trailer when Wednesday wakes, and in a shocking turn of events, her novel spirit guide is revealed. Though the most common fan theory was her Aunt Ophelia, that’s far from the case. Instead, it’s Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie). As the trailer continues, fans see the ramifications of Tyler Galpin’s (Hunter Doohan) escape from Willow Hill and Enid Sinclair’s (Emma Meyers) life still in danger. Co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar revealed during Collider’s Exclusive Preview that:
“The final four episodes of Season 2 unearth darker secrets, summon surprise cameos, and deliver twists so sharp they make even Wednesday flinch.”
Principal Weems becoming Wednesday’s spirit guide is startling to say the least. Weems was a shapeshifter, not a psychic like Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) or Wednesday, and it was previously understood that a spirit guide would teach a psychic how to harness their abilities by speaking from experience from beyond the grave. Something much bigger could very well be at play here. In the trailer, the Addams Family returns, including Joanna Lumley as Hester Frump. There are also still more secrets to be revealed by Morticia, likely relating to her sister Ophelia and her disappearance more than 20 years prior. Given the fact that Weems knew Morticia at school, it’s possible she knew Ophelia as well, though it’s not been stated how much older Morticia is than Ophelia.
‘Wednesday’ Co-Creators Are Already in the Season 3 Writer’s Room
When talking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, co-creators Gough and Millar explained that “We’re actually in the writers’ room for Season 3. So we’re down the road a bit in the writers’ room, but now we, of course, stop to launch Season 2.” The news is uplifting to hear, since fans had to wait three years between Seasons 1 and 2 of this fresh novel take on The Addams Family. Gough and Millar express a similar sentiment from the perspective being creatives with huge gaps like that in their work:
“We’re used to doing network TV, it’s what we grew up on, Smallville was like every season it was 22. So it’s frustrating for us too, as storytellers and creators, to have to wait to share what we’re doing with an audience that long.”
As for the latter half of Season 2, novel images also reveal what looks to be a potential confrontation between Morticia and Hester. Other images resemble clips revealed in the trailer, like the return of Fred Armisen‘s Uncle Fester, and they show another angle of the Outcast Day of Remembrance. There’s also the addition of what looks to be a reunion of The Nightshades that were abolished by Steve Buscemi‘s Principal Barry Dort in Episode 1.
