If you’ve been left feeling a little empty-handed when it comes to home invasion movies as of slow, look no further than our exclusive unveiling of the trailer for Ritesh Gupta’s The Red Mask. Ahead of its U.S. domestic premiere later this week at Screamfest, Collider is excited to peel off the mask and debut the teaser for the horror flick that’s coming to the States following a sold-out international premiere back in August at London’s FrightFest. With critical approval already rolling in, the Helena Howard (The Wilds), Inanna Sarkis (After We Collided), Jake Abel (Supernatural) and Kelli Garner (The Aviator)-led film is ready to crank up the nostalgia and bring glory back to the beloved subgenre.

In line with how most bad ideas start, the trailer follows four friends to a remote cabin in the woods where Allina (Howard) is drumming up inspiration for her adaptation of the classic slasher of yesteryear, The Red Mask. Hoping that with the assist of her fiancée Deetz (Sarkis), and their two pals, Claire (Garner) and Ryan (Abel), she’ll be able to write a newfangled take on the fan-favorite, Allina suggests they play a game that sees them each taking turns as the killers and getting crafty with it. But things quickly go off the rails when two gameplayers begin to take the festivities a little bit too seriously, bending the rules to their will and leaving buckets of blood in their wake.

‘The Red Mask’s Massively Positive Premiere

It isn’t every day that an audience reacts with over-the-top positivity to something fresh, but the FrightFest attendees gave The Red Mask a huge stamp of approval. Reflecting on that special moment and its upcoming U.S. premiere, Gupta said,

“As a director you never know how your film will be received when you make your very first public showing. But the reception at FrightFest blew me away. To hear the cheers and roars with some of our final kills was beyond my wildest expectations. With ScreamFest, this is a special showing for me. When other productions were fleeing LA chasing tax credits in other states, we ran towards the city to work with our friends in the business in order to support the film community of Los Angeles. So, to be able to have your U.S. Premiere not only be in LA but be at Screamfest in the Chinese Theater is an ultra-special moment for me. I can’t wait to experience the film with this audience.”

Additionally, the film’s producer, Atit Shah, had a message for distributors who might be circling the project after the credits roll later this week, adding,

“The Red Mask is both a love letter and a reinvention. It thrills hardcore horror fans but is crafted to break out with a wider audience. The buzz from FrightFest showed us this film can travel, and we’re ready to partner with distributors who want the next crossover genre success.”
