One week after announcing participating buyers at TIFF: The Market (September 10-16), top brass have published a roll call of sales and film promotional agencies that will participate in the inaugural event in Toronto.

AGC Studios, FilmNation, Anton, Global Constellation, Plus M, SND, Raven Banner, and WME Independent are among sales agents confirmed to attend alongside Cinema do Brasil, Unifrance, ICEX, Flanders Image, and Ukrainian State Film Agency, among others.

Players including A24, Protagonist Pictures, Black Bear, HanWay Films, Pathé, Charades, and Cornerstone are categorised as “Regular TIFF attendees expected to attend”.

When asked by Screen whether the latest class of attendees will set up offices in official venues, TIFF: The market sources said some will be at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre while others have booked suites at the market’s two partner hotels, The Ritz Carlton and InterContinental.

For a number of years some sales agents have been operating out of Soho Metropolitan and other spaces outside the official TIFF footprint while they conducted business at the unofficial market that has existed alongside the festival. That has been something of a bugbear for TIFF: The Market organisers, who will be looking to maximise revenue through renting official exhibition space.

Top brass are helping to cover some costs for 200 invited buyers – they will announce more invitees from the acquisitions sector in due course – and want to facilitate sales through TIFF’s ongoing series of tailored market screenings where recruited audiences attend buzzy screenings like recent examples The Holdovers and Cliffhanger. Market screenings are discounted at 50% and official hotels up to 40% for exhibitors.

TIFF: The Market staff emphasised last year’s $14m transaction at TIFF between Focus Features and Capstone Global for most of the world on Obsession, Curry Barker’s horror feature smash that currently stands at more than $342m worldwide. While any market would relish transactions of that order of magnitude, the deal was a pure festival play.

“We designed the Market to meet the needs of a global sales community seeking more buyer engagement through access to premium screening facilities, cost-effective exhibition solutions, and a compact footprint that reduces travel time and maximizes opportunities for face-to-face meetings,” TIFF: The Market head Charles Tremblay said.

TIFF: The Market is funded by a $16.9m (C$23m) investment by the Canadian federal government over three years and is supported by Telefilm Canada.
