“I’m deeply addicted to work. Because I choose the work over family.” Barletta Productions has unveiled the first trailer for a documentary film titled Robert Richardson: The White Devil, a story about the Oscar winning cinematographer Robert Richardson. The is premiering at the 2026 Karlovy Vary Film Festival (aka KVIFF) next month in Czechia, because it’s directed by a Czech director named Jana Hojdova. She is also a cinematographer and this film is also her story of becoming friends with Robert Richardson after she reached out to him. Her intro: “Several years ago, while living in Prague, I sent an email to [him] with almost no expectation of ever getting a reply. To me, he was one of the greatest cinematographers of all time, the creative force behind some of cinema’s most unforgettable images. When he replied, that single message unexpectedly became the beginning of a years-long journey that took me from Los Angeles and London to New Zealand and Sofia as I followed Richardson during the making of several major films.” Well, I’m intrigued – I want to watch. Through exclusive interviews, archival materials, insights from his many collaborators, this offers a portrait of one of the industry’s most influential cinematographers. View below.

Intro via KVIFF: Jana Hojdová, a former cinematography student at Prague’s FAMU, sent an email in order to get a contact for Robert Richardson, one of the most distinguished cinematographers on the scene today. It must have been a great surprise for her to receive a reply from the man himself. What started as just a student exercise and master’s degree project soon evolved into a imaginative partnership and personal friendship. The more improbable the film’s premise seems, the more fascinated we become by its portrait of a distinctive & uncompromising artist, 3-time Academy Award winner, acclaimed collaborator of such directors as Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino. Robert Richardson: The White Devil is a documentary film directed by Czech cinematographer / filmmaker Jana Hojdova, director of one other tiny film previously, and a cinematographer on a few other indie films. This doc is premiering at the 2026 Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia this summer. No other release dates have been set – stay tuned.
