With The Dog Stars hitting cinemas this week, Sir Ridley Scott is clearly back in his sci-fi bag after spending the last few years primarily plying his trade with historical epics (Napoleon, Gladiator II, The Last Duel, and, er, House Of Gucci). As such, the question of whether Sir Ridders would ever consider returning to arguably his most celebrated speculative fiction progeny, Alien, has reared its head once again. And per a recent interview with The LA Times, it turns out that the answer is, well, yes actually — and the great Scott already has some pretty massive plans in mind.
In a wide-ranging interview that elsewhere revealed Scott’s Treasure Island movie with Hugh Jackman is set to shoot in November and several other movies (a Bee Gees biopic, WWI thriller Covenant With Death) are on the octogenarian auteur’s horizons, Scott revealed that a long-awaited third Alien prequel — following up 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant — is in the works. According to Scott, the plan is to get Michael Fassbender back to reprise his role as rogue AI android David in a movie that’d see the soft-spoken but incredibly sinister synth creating “a brave new world for himself.” Scott, whose aversion to AI is well-documented in both his movies and his public statements, is keen to explore the concept of malfunctioning artificial intelligence further in a potential ‘David Trilogy’ capper. “AIs can go off,” Scott tells The LA Times. “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”
At this point, Scott’s Alien plans remain just that — plans. As such, we’ve no idea when we could expect to see David’s return or who would even be involved. Suffice it to say however, with Alien Covenant having ended with David assuming control of 2000 sleeping colonists and a couple of face hugger embryos, there’s no shortage of directions for Scott to explore in bridging the gap between his prequels and the original movie. Honestly, between this news, the upcoming Alien: Earth Season 2, and an Alien: Romulus sequel still heading our way, there’s never been a better time to be a mighty xenomorphin’ fan. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to practice the flute in preparation for David’s return — and yes, we will do the fingering.
