No one does repressed families quite like the British. And it seems Bill Nighy’s latest film, & Sons, will be no exception. Nighy’s latest sees him getting dishevelled to play a dying novelist, making one last attempt to connect with his estranged family. And they’re quite a clan, comprising a raft of youthful British talent: George McKay, A Quiet Place’s Noah Jupe, and a particularly beardy Johnny Flynn (soon to be seen in HBO’s Harry Potter series). That trio plays & Sons’ eponymous sons – although they’re hardly a united front, with family secrets bubbling under the surface, and Nighy’s father figure preparing to deliver a confession that could bring his family closer together or tear them all apart. Beyond Nighy and the starry trio of sons, the film boasts an impressive homegrown cast – also featuring Imelda Staunton and Dominic West. And it looks like we could be in for a powerful turn from the ever-great Nighy as the hard patriarch – and not just because he looks less dapper than usual. The film comes from Argentine director Pablo Trapero, with a script from Women Talking filmmaker Sarah Polley. Here’s the official synopsis: “A world-renowned but reclusive novelist, convinced he is about to die, summons his estranged sons to his home. But instead of seeking forgiveness for his countless mistakes, he instead reveals a truly unbelievable secret that brings his beloved ex-wife back into his orbit. With decades of resentment, jealousy and rage on the verge of spilling over, this splintered family is forced to face an inevitable reckoning, for better or for worse.”
Just what could Nighy’s character be hiding? Could it be worse than an affair? Is there something more to Noah Jupe’s heritage that he’s letting on? See what secrets are spilled in & Sons when it arrives in UK cinemas on August 21.
