“I choose to believe in myself.” Bleecker Street debuted the first official trailer for the film The Liberation, the latest story from filmmaker Guy Nattiv (of Skin, Golda, Tatami). Formerly titled Harmonia (the name of the commune where they live), it’s the story of a real cult that lured in women with a promise of freedom from their burdens. After premiering at the 2026 Telluride Film Festival, it has played at the Toronto, Mill Valley, Hamptons, Warsaw, London, Chicago, and Denver Film Festivals this fall. With a final release set to start in January in select theaters. Rita, a mother escaping the weight of a harrowing past, finds solace in a secluded all-women’s cult – but when her daughters arrive she must choose between the up-to-date freedom she’s found and the life she left behind. Based on a true story, inspired by Guy Nattiv’s own grandmother & her experiences. The Liberation stars Carrie Coon as Rita, Lily James as cult leader Ricki, Bella Ramsey & Odessa Young as her two daughters, Siobhan Williams, Maia Michaels, and Tracy Letts. It’s a solid film but not without some flaws, exploring some engaging territory with this cult and all the women and the mechanisms of the mental trap. If you’re curious after the trailer, add this to your watchlist this winter.
Here’s the first official trailer for Guy Nattiv’s film The Liberation, direct from Bleecker’s YouTube:
Rita (Carrie Coon), a woman in midlife haunted by the weight of her past, encounters magnetic youthful spiritual leader Ricki (Lily James) and leaves her family to follow her to an all-female commune. But when her daughters Ella (Bella Ramsey) and Jo (Odessa Young) arrive unexpectedly and become drawn into the group’s seductive world, Rita is forced to choose between the family she left behind and the life she believes can save her. The Liberation is directed by acclaimed Israeli-American filmmaker Guy Nattiv, director of Strangers, The Flood, Magic Men, Skin, Golda, and Tatami previously; and Oscar winner for the brief film Skin (2018). The screenplay is by Guy Nattiv and Noa Berman-Herzberg; inspired by Nattiv’s grandmother. Produced by Julia Lebedev, Roy Lee, Oren Moverman, Guy Nattiv, Jaime Ray Newman, Steven Schneider, Eddie Vaisman. This initially premiered at the 2026 Telluride Film Festival this fall. Bleecker Street debuts Guy Nattiv’s The Liberation film in select US theaters starting January 8th, 2027 coming up. Intrigued?
