Amid the ongoing discussions about who’ll be playing the next James Bond (we’re still backing our favourite Slow Horse, Jack Lowden, in case you were wondering), a major 007 milestone has — like MI6’s finest himself — stealthily snuck up on us and caught us all unawares. Yes, somehow it has been 20 years since Daniel Craig’s blue-eyed Bond made his big-screen debut in Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale, silencing any naysayers and doubters with a up-to-date grit and emotional vulnerability hitherto unseen in the spy franchise. And to celebrate the movie’s anniversary, Casino Royale is heading back to cinemas worldwide in October, offering cinemagoers a chance to revisit a up-to-date classic before Denis Villeneuve kicks off a up-to-date era for Bond in the coming years. From its breathless parkour chase opening in Madagascar to its high-stakes poker-based climax at the high roller tables of Montenegro, Casino Royale ushered in a up-to-date era for 007 quite unlike anything that had come before it. Not only was Craig a revelation as a blue steel Bond, but the movie also gave us an all-timer villain in the form of Mads Mikkelsen’s ball-whipping, bloody-teared Le Chiffre, and a heartbreaking twist on the Bond girl archetype in the form of Eva Green’s Vesper Lynd. And while the Craig era of Bond is (almost) bangers all the way, a chance to revisit the one that kicked the era off, on the biggest screen possible, isn’t to be missed.
We don’t yet know exactly on what dates — or indeed in what formats — Casino Royale is heading back to our screens. However, with a worldwide rollout in the works and buzz building by the day for Amazon MGM Studios’ Bond 26, we fully expect this re-release to be given a licence to thrill for as long and on as huge an array of screens as possible.
