‘Resident Evil’ sets franchise record with $320m total
An estimated $40.6m opening in China for Sony’s Resident Evil reboot saw Zach Cregger’s video game adaptation return to the global top spot with a $62.65m weekend total.
Cumulative worldwide box office for the TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film and Davis Films production is now $320.2m – eclipsing 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ($312.2m) to become the top title in the eight-film series. The Final Chapter achieved its impressive number thanks to a $159.5m contribution from China, which was more than half the total.
Resident Evil also opened in Japan at the weekend, grossing an estimated $3.5m. In China, the opening number was the best for a horror film in the past two years. Imax accounted for $7.7m of the China opening number.
North America box office on the film is now $138.5m. Among international markets, behind China is UK/Ireland with $17.0m to date, ahead of Mexico ($11.8m), Australia ($8.5m), Germany ($7.3m) and Spain ($7.1m).
In addition to becoming the top film in its franchise, Resident Evil has also set a record for Cregger – beating his Weapons ($270.1m worldwide for Warner Bros last year). Comparisons in this report are not adjusted for inflation.
‘Other Mommy’ tops North American box office
A sturdy opening in North America helped Universal’s Other Mommy achieve second place in the global ranking, with an estimated $45.2m. North America delivered $27.5m of this sum, and international markets $17.7m.
Other Mommy topped the North America box office, with more than double the number of the film in second place, Amazon MGM Studios’ Verity. The international rollout on the Blumhouse Atomic Monster title is not yet complete, with several key territories yet to open: France this coming week, Germany on October 29, and both South Korea and Japan in November.
Other Mommy topped the local box office in its three leading international markets: UK/Ireland (an estimated $2.6m debut), Italy ($2.2m) and Mexico ($1.9m). Next come Australia ($1.1m), Spain ($986,000) and Brazil ($751,000).
Across international markets so far released, Other Mommy’s box office is ahead of openings for the likes of M3GAN, The Black Phone and Smile.
Rob Savage directs and James Wan produces this adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around The House. Jessica Chastain stars as the titular sinister entity who is indistinguishable from the real mother of an eight-year-old girl (Arabella Olivia Clark).
With a production budget reported in the $18m-$19m range, this will be another profitable title for Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
‘The Social Reckoning’ delivers limp $9m opening
While Sony can toast the return of Resident Evil to the top of the worldwide box office chart, the company will be less delighted with the opening numbers for Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning: an estimated $5.5m in North America, $3.5m across international markets, and thus $9.0m worldwide.
That opening number was only good enough for seventh place in the worldwide weekend chart.
While David Fincher’s The Social Network invited cinemagoers inside the giddy ride of Facebook, this second film offers a whistleblower tale, exposing the preference of profit over corporate ethics. Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong star.
The Social Reckoning has so far released in only 29 international markets. Upcoming are Brazil and Mexico on October 22.
The Social Network reached $224.9m in 2010, according to available data: $97.0m in North America and $128.0m in international markets. Among the latter, top performers were Japan, UK/Ireland and France.
‘Forgotten Island’ expands footprint, hits $50m total
It’s a marathon, not a sprint – at least Universal is hoping this will be the case with its latest release of a DreamWorks animation, Forgotten Island. The Philippines-set tale is rolling out gradually across international markets, including latest opening Germany, which debuted with an estimated $478,000.
Forgotten Island added an estimated $6.5m at the weekend, roughly evenly split between North America and 52 international territories. Global tally is now $50.2m.
In cumulative, Australia leads with $4.7m, ahead of Philippines ($3.6m). Key markets yet to welcome the film include UK/Ireland (October 16) and France (October 21).
‘Verity’ is second biggest Colleen Hoover adaptation
Amazon MGM Studios’ Verity saw a massive drop at the North American box office, falling 64% in its second session, but showed much stronger traction internationally – down just 34% in holdover markets. Weekend takings are an estimated $30.1m worldwide.
International ($60.1m so far) has now overtaken North America ($53.9m). The $114.0m global total is the second-biggest for a Colleen Hoover adaptation – ahead of the lifetime cumes for Regretting You ($90.5m) and Reminders Of Him ($89.3m). Top Hoover adaptation remains remains It Ends With Us ($351.4m worldwide).
Top international markets for Verity are UK/Ireland ($9.7m after two weekends), Germany ($7.2m) and Brazil ($6.9m).
Verity is one of eight holdover titles surviving in the worldwide weekend top 10 chart, alongside US films Resident Evil, Heart Of The Beast ($131.4m so far, and performing especially well in France), Digger (a delicate $35.3m total), Forgotten Island and The Odyssey ($1.78bn). Also in the top 10 are India’s Drishyam – The Conclusion ($51.5m so far) and China’s Traces Of Justice aka Sherlock Of China ($72.8m).
Falling out of the top 10 chart this week are Disney’s Avengers Endgame: Encore and Chinese comedy Mr & Mrs Pardon.
