It’s no secret that David Corenswet knows a thing or two about playing a super man — just last summer he was gadding about with the huge red S on his chest in James Gunn’s DCU blockbuster, well, Superman. But in Mr. Irrelevant, the latest from Warm Bodies and soon to be Days Of Thunder 2 director Jonathan Levine, the never-more-relevant Corenswet portrays a very different, altogether more grounded kind of hero: John Tuggle. As the last player selected in the last round of the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants, Tuggle’s tale is a true underdog story quite unlike any other — and, as the first trailer for the movie shows, it’s an inspirational and emotional one at that. Check it out below;
Oh man, what were the chances of our hay fever hitting just as we watched this trailer? Seriously, so bizarre! Anyway, this has all the hallmarks of an absolute doozy, doesn’t it? A charming dude with oodles of charisma cast as the twinkly-eyed underdog who defies the critics, gets the girl, and inspires his teammates to victory is a tale as senior as time. But the specific and singular story of John Tuggle, whose story may ultimately end in tragedy but whose legend lives on to this day, has got it all: exquisite highs, crushing lows, good humour, and humanity in abundance. And, if record-high early test audience scores are anything to go by, then Levine’s movie is set to deliver a film worthy of its subject.
The official synopsis of Jonathan Levine’s latest — which co-stars the likes of Isabel May, Michael Shannon, and David Krumholtz — reads: “Mr. Irrelevant is the inspiring true story of John Tuggle (David Corenswet), the last player selected in the last round of the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants. A true underdog, Tuggle defied expectations on the field and off for his then first-year head coach, Bill Parcells (Michael Shannon), his newfound love (Isabel May), and his team, proving that remarkable hope and perseverance can transcend even the greatest challenges.”
Due to touchdown in cinemas in the US on 25 December ahead of a UK release on New Year’s Day 2027, here’s hoping Mr. Irrelevant proves anything but when it arrives on our screens. After that trailer, colour us quietly hopeful we’ve got another banger biopic on our hands here.
