Finally. For months now, Tom Cruise and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu have been teasing glimpses of Digger – their wild fresh movie, centred on a wild fresh larger-than-life character for Cruise, by the name of Digger Rockwell. And now – at last – we have a full trailer that shows off our best look at Digger, the movie, and Digger the character too. It’s a role that sees Cruise play in a non-action zone for the first time in yonks, donning all kinds of prosthetics, and a broad accent too. And as for the film itself, it looks like a Dr. Strangelove-esque satire on obscure themes, bringing barbed laughs to an ecological doomsday scenario. Check out the trailer here:
There we have it: Digger Rockwell. Cruise’s character seems to be an enormously opulent magnate whose meddling with glaciers sparks a possible global catastrophe. Did you ever think you’d see Tom Cruise washing a dead (or, at best, dying) cat? Or saying, “just take a little taste for daddy?” to said cat (alive)? Or talking about his dick on a Zoom call? It’s fair to say this is pushing the star back into the sort of wilder characters from earlier in his career, more akin to Magnolia’s Frank TJ Mackey, crossed with Tropic Thunder’s Les Grossman. Here’s the official synopsis: “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

Beyond Cruise, there’s an outstanding cast for this one: Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, to name a few. Iñárritu is directing from a script he wrote with Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman – and he’s once again teaming up with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, this time for elevated VistaVision frames.
Can Digger avert disaster? Will the film send Tom Cruise’s career in a fresh direction going forwards? And is that cat ok? We’ll find out when Digger breaks ground in cinemas on October 2.
