UK actor Emily Watson will serve as president of the jury for the feature film competition programme at the 2026 Sarajevo Film Festival and will receive the honorary award, the Heart of Sarajevo.

Watson’s credits include Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet, Lars von Trier’s Breaking The Waves, Tim Mielants’ Small Things Like These, for which she was awarded the Silver Bear for best supporting actress at the Berlinale in 2024, and HBO Max series Dune: Prophecy.

She also received the Richard Harris outstanding contribution award at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) last year.

Previous recipients of the honorary Heart of Sarajevo include Willem Dafoe, Stellan Skarsgård, Ray Winstone, Paolo Sorrentino and Meg Ryan.

“Twenty years after her last visit to Sarajevo, we are truly delighted to welcome Emily Watson back to the festival – this time not only as the recipient of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, but also as president of the Competition Jury,” said Jovan Marjanović, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

“An actress whose talent, intelligence and dedication to the craft have left a profound mark on contemporary cinema, Emily Watson has, throughout her remarkable career, moved audiences and critics alike with performances of extraordinary emotional precision and strength.”

Sarajevo Film Festival runs in Bosnia and Herzegovina from August 14-21.
