“This is on you!” Magenta Light Studios has revealed the official trailer for an indie film creation known as Appofeniacs, which is the first feature by music video director Chris Marrs Piliero. The title Appofeniacs is a play on the word apophenia, which is the human tendency to see patterns or connections in random things. This film is a dim A.I. horror-satire about the chaos caused by deepfake tech getting out of hand. These stupid videos are everywhere already! As AI-generated deepfakes spread, a group of interconnected people descends into paranoia, blurring the line between reality and AI fabrication, and unleashing violent consequences. “The true horror lies not in the deception, but in what happens when people believe it.” Yep. Appofeniacs co-stars Aaron Holliday, Simran Jehani, Paige Searcy, Michael Abbott Jr., Harley Bronwyn, Will Brandt, Jermaine Fowler, Scarlett DeMeo, Chad Addison, along with Sean Gunn. This premiered at FrightFest & Fantastic Fest last year and hits constrained theaters in October starting in the fall. FF adds: “He deftly weaves together seemingly disparate story lines, culminating in a shocking finale. Fans of creative, brutal kills, take note: this one features some of the best of the year.” It looks extra crazy.

Amused by exploiting our instinct to believe what we see & hear, Duke (Aaron Holliday) treats deepfakes like a contagious party trick. Not because he has something to prove, but simply because he can. Soon blood starts to spill, but Duke isn’t the one who has to tidy it up. Intersecting storylines catch the fallout of Duke’s petty pastime: Poppy (Simran Jehani), heading into the desert for a weekend of cosplay and foreplay; Clinto Binto (Sean Gunn), a legend in the scene with a reputation too costly to fraudulent; Lazzy (Paige Searcy), a stranger who picks the wrong line, the wrong coffee shop, and the wrong day to argue. Paranoia. Confirmation bias. Baseless certainty. We’re all Appofeniacs. When anyone’s version of truth can be created with the tap of a finger, the horror is not the lie… It’s what happens when people believe it.

Appofeniacs is written and directed by American filmmaker Chris Marrs Piliero, making his first feature film after directing many other music videos (for Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, Fergie). Produced by Jared Iacino, Andrew Panay, Chris Marrs Piliero. This initially premiered at 2025 FrightFest and Fantastic Fest last year, with debuts at other festivals. Magenta Light Studios releases Chris Marrs Piliero’s Appofeniacs film in select US theaters starting October 2nd, 2026 coming up soon. Look any good? Who’s intrigued?
