František Klišík, protagonist of Better Go Mad in the Wild, has died just hours after the documentary won the main Grand Prix prize at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Klišík was found dead in a pond in the town of Ohrobec near the Czech capital Prague on the morning of Sunday, July 13, according to several Czech media outlets. He was 62 years senior.

Czech radio station Radiozurnal announced the death on Sunday, July 13. Klišík had attended Karlovy Vary just three days previously for the film’s world premiere on Thursday, July 10.

Last night it became the first Czech film for eight years to win the top Karlovy Vary prize.

Better Go Mad in the Wild is loosely based on Ales Palan and Jan Sibik’s book of the same name, and depicts twin brothers František and Ondrej Klišík, who live a seemingly absurd life outside of regular society. Palan posted a photo on Facebook of Frantisek attending the festival in tribute following his death.

The Karlovy Vary jury described the film as “a funny valentine to the fading art of being true to yourself… In the lifestyle it portrays but also in the filmmaking risks it takes and the raucously loving brotherhood it admires, Better Go Mad in the Wild feels like a gulp of fresh, woody air, or a quick dip in an outdoor pond, or a moment of contemplation as a cow chews on your beard.”

It is the fifth feature by Czechoslovakian filmmaker Miro Remo; and is produced by Remo and Tomas Hruby, for Slovak company Arsy-Versy in co-production with Czech firm nutprodukce. Filmotor handles sales.

Screen has contacted the festival for comment.
