Ever since he first stomped onto the cinema screen, Godzilla has been large. But Godzilla Minus Zero looks seriously BIG. Not just because it’s the sequel to Toho’s instant classic Minus One, with the mega-lizard rising back up from the depths, seemingly very unhappy at being blown to bits – but because it’s an all-out IMAX production, letting the legendary kaiju fill the extra-tall frame with his fearsome form. And the up-to-date Godzilla Minus Zero trailer makes the most of that fact – delivering a jaw-dropping aspect ratio shift as the large guy prepares to wreak more havoc. But it seems he won’t be the only one turning Japan (and maybe other places too) to rubble…
First things first, let’s talk those mega Godzilla shots. Returning Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is once again overseeing the VFX here too, and given that this is Japan’s first ever IMAX production, it seems he’s going all-out on making Godzilla as imposing as possible in that expanded ratio. And there’s more human drama from Shikishima and Noriko, now two years removed from the Godzilla attacks of Minus One, and still caring for orphaned youngster Akiko.
But the thing that’s going to get all the Godzilla fans talking? Technically, you don’t even see it, and yet there are plenty of hints: all signs point towards King Ghidorah, the three-headed extra-terrestrial dragon kaiju, being an additional antagonist this time around. First up, there’s all that gold lightning, a key hallmark of Ghidorah; there’s a mention that “this isn’t Godzilla we are talking about” amid the city-razing action; and then there’s that distinctive skreee-onk! cry, which is highly familiar to fans, and a world away from Godzilla’s bellowing roar. It seems like Yamazaki is about to deliver some major monster brawls: see that ending shot of Godzilla plummeting out of the sky. That’s got to hurt!

Hopefully, Godzilla Minus Zero will prove a worthy follow-up to one of the greatest Godzilla films ever made. We’ll find out when it hits UK cinemas on November 6.
