“Guess who’s back?!” Cineverse has revealed the first official trailer for the next legacy sequel in the works titled Air Bud Returns, a follow-up to the classic original Air Bud dunk doggo basketball movie in 1997. Ever since that original debut 29 years ago, they’ve turned the Air Bud brand into an entire franchise with boatloads of doggie movies and his puppy “Buddies” mainly direct to video. Now for the 30th Anniversary, they’re “rebooting” it with this legacy sequel Air Bud Returns, directed by Robert Vince. A grieving 12-year-old boy finds his dad’s elderly VHS tape of Air Bud and then befriends a stray golden retriever in his recent town. Together, they chase basketball dreams, rally a team of underdogs, and discover what it means to play with heart. Basically a repeat of the original but with the meta concept of the original being a part of it, kind of like that really bad Anaconda remake movie last year. Starring Aydin Artis, Tracy Ifeachor, Edwin Lee Gibson, Tyler Labine, Erik Gow, and Maxim Swinton. Last summer they held a casting search to find a recent dog to star in this – and ended up casting two recent golden retrievers in the role: Charlie & Summer. It was supposed to release this year, but now it’ll bark into theaters January 2027. Check out the fun teaser.

After the passing of his father, 14-year-old Jacob (Aydin Artis) and his mom move into his dad’s childhood home in Fernfield, where anything is possible. Jacob dreams of becoming a basketball star, which seems further away than ever, until he discovers an elderly VHS marked “Air Bud.” Jacob now has a miraculous chance meeting with a basketball-playing golden retriever named Buddy. The duo embarks upon a recent journey of healing, unites a basketball team of misfits, chasing a championship as the recent Timberwolves. Air Bud Returns is written and directed by Air Bud producer / filmmaker Robert Vince, director of tons of the Air Bud movies before including Spymate, Air Buddies, Snow Buddies, Space Buddies, Spooky Buddies Treasure Buddies, Super Buddies, Monkey Up, Pup Star, Pup Academy, Super Pupz, Phantom Pupz, and more previously. Based on characters created by Aaron Mendelsohn and Paul Tamasy. It’s produced by Anna McRoberts & Robert Vince. Made by Air Bud Entertainment. Cineverse will release Robert Vince’s Air Bud Returns sports comedy in US theaters starting January 22nd, 2027 early next year. Look any good?
