2026 has been a benchmark year for Game of Thrones fans, who have been treated to a pair of live-action projects. The first Game of Thrones-adjacent show to premiere this year was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which takes place around 70 years before the events of the original show. The show is a personal favorite of author George R.R. Martin, who wrote the Dunk and Egg brief stories that inspired it. More recently, the highly anticipated third season of House of the Dragon just wrapped up on HBO Max, and opinions vary wildly from those who read the source material and those who haven’t. Martin has distanced himself from the show, citing a impoverished relationship with writer and showrunner Ryan J. Condal, who has ignored his feedback on recent seasons.
House of the Dragon is over for now after an explosive Season 3 finale this past Sunday, but it’s already been confirmed that the next season is on the way in 2028. The only caveat is that it’s going to be the final season of the show, which surprised some fans who were expecting it to be around as long as the original Game of Thrones show. While the wait for House of the Dragon Season 4 seems long right now, there is another release coming much sooner to support close the gap. Officially set to launch later this year on December 1 is the physical media collection for House of the Dragon Season 3, which includes a 4K UHD Steelbook, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and a normal DVD. In an era where many companies are discarding physical media, it’s refreshing to see HBO continue to invest in discs.

What Else Does ‘Game of Thrones’ Have in the Works?
Even though House of the Dragon is coming to an end in just two years, there’s still a lot to be excited about in the future of the Game of Thrones franchise. The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already wrapped filming and is confirmed to release in the second half of next year. HBO is also difficult at work developing a live-action Game of Thrones movie about Aegon’s Conquest coming to theaters beyond 2027, and if it lands a 2029 release, that will be four years straight packed with novel franchise releases.
