Cinema admissions in Indonesia dropped 16.7% in the first half of 2026, despite powerful performances from local titles.
A total of 53.77 million admissions were recorded over the period, which translated to an estimated $137.7m (IDR2.48tn) based on an average ticket price of $2.56 (IDR46,056).
The top five biggest earners at the box office were all local titles, led by Danur: The Last Chapter with 3.62 million admissions. The supernatural horror marks the fourth instalment in the popular Danur franchise and reunited director Awi Suryadi with actress Prilly Latuconsina.
It was followed by Joko Anwar’s horror comedy Ghost In The Cell (3.38 million admissions), which premiered at the Berlinale in February before opening in local cinemas on April 16; Naya Anindita’s family drama Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti (3 million admissions); Hadrah Daeng Ratu’s forest-set horror Alas Roban (2.43 million admissions); and Bayu Skak’s comedy horror Sekawan Limo 2: Gunung Klawih (2.06 million admissions).
Both Danur: The Last Chapter and Tunggu Aku Sukses Nanti opened on March 18 during Eid Al-Fitr. It is traditionally one of the most lucrative box office seasons and also saw the release of Azhar Kinoi Lubis’ witchcraft horror Suzzanna: Santet Dosa di Atas Dosa (1.53 million admissions), Ryan Adriandhy’s family drama Na Willa (1.4 million admissions) and Dinna Jasanti’s family drama Senin Harga Naik (1.18 million admissions) on the same day.
As Eid Al-Fitr was celebrated in March this year, it became the highest grossing month in the period with 11.84 million admissions, followed by April with 9.92 million admissions, boosted by Ghost In The Cell.
Overall, local films contributed almost 72% of all cinema admissions despite representing only one-third of total releases, reflecting an ongoing trend that audience demand remained firmly concentrated on local stories.
Only three international titles made the top 20, led by Disney animation Toy Story 5 in sixth place. Yeon Sang-ho’s Korean zombie thriller Colony ranked 11th (1.42 million), while Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (756,000 admissions) came in 20th.
The first half of 2026 produced 15 titles that grossed more than one million admissions before the end of June, representing the fastest pace on record. For comparison, there were 20 titles that crossed the one million admissions mark in all of 2023, 21 in 2024, and 16 in 2025.
The first half of 2025 recorded 64.55 million cinema admissions primarily driven by the phenomenal success of local animated feature Jumbo, which became the country’s biggest ever local film with 10.1m admissions by early June – 66 days since its release during Eid Al-Fitr.
