He might’ve won our hearts — and no shortage of critical acclaim — for his role as the ever-loyal Eumaeus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey this summer, but it sounds like John Leguizamo is eyeing an altogether less savoury role for his next Universal picture. According to THR, the versatile Colombian actor has just joined the cast of F1 director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Miami Vice ’85, a fresh modern take on the eponymous 80s cop show. And, what’s more, sources are stating Leguizamo’s been tapped to play the film’s main villain.
Penned by Nightcrawler writer-director — and brother of Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy — Dan Gilroy, Kosinski’s retooling of Miami Vice is set to see Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler take on the roles of Detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, the sharp-dressing undercover cop duo who cruise the Miami strip busting drug dealers and listening to era-appropriate bangers. Now, at this stage it’s unknown what exactly Leguizamo’s role will entail, or indeed what the film’s plot more broadly involves, but we do know that Kosinski’s film — the first screen take on the franchise since Michael Mann’s 2006 movie — is set to take a deep dive into the glamour and corruption of Miami in the decade the original series was born. We also know that Danny Ramirez, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, and Camila Morrone are also making the trip to Vice City for this one.
Due to enter production in New York and Miami this November, Miami Vice ’85 is being filmed for IMAX and revving up for a planned May 19, 2028 release. And given the quality of the talent being assembled both in front and behind the camera, we’re already seated, white slacks and shades on, ready and raring to go for this one. *Alexa, play ‘Own The Night’*
