The docuseries arrives as the world awaits a verdict in another high-profile case: that of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts nurse who’s been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of her three children. While Clancy has not disputed that she strangled her adolescent kids, she has pleaded not guilty to murder. The defense argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. “People have a hard time talking about mental illness. They’ll talk around it and they’ll blame other things,” Gasparro says. “The stories [of Clancy and Mica] are different…but [in both cases] two things can be true: Somebody could have a mental illness—Mica was diagnosed with bipolar…. There’s a mental health aspect to this, but there’s also somebody that’s [allegedly] controlling and manipulative. People will look past the mental illness and say [Mica] didn’t [just] kill herself…But then I think you’re losing something important.”
Willoughby Nason agrees that both Mica’s story and the Clancy case bring an critical conversation about women’s mental health care to the forefront. “There’s still a lot of shame with mental illness and it’s not really understood, especially for women. Our society just puts women in this stereotypical, vulnerable role where they need rescuers,” she explains.

The toxic relationship between Solid Rock pastor John-Paul and choir leader Mica began to form when she was a teenager. “She wanted to be a pastor’s wife since she was a little girl,” Willoughby Nason says. “She grew up in a pretty big family. They moved a bit…It seemed that she wanted stability, and from a young age she found that in the church.”
John-Paul officiated the wedding between an 18-year-old Mica and her first husband, Jeremy, who was also a member of Solid Rock Church. According to Mica’s family, she and an also-married John-Paul began having an affair in 2015, when she was 20 and he was 35. Mica and John-Paul left their respective spouses and wed in 2017—six days after her release from a mental health facility, where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Withholding Mica’s medication was one of multiple ways that John-Paul exerted control over his wife during their six-year marriage, Mica’s family and friends allege in the documentary. During their time as husband and wife, Mica got John-Paul’s signature tattooed across the side of her body and took testosterone, something she said she did to keep up with her husband’s high sex drive, as a friend recalls in the series; it altered her voice, the friend says, and made it challenging for her to sing as the women’s ministry leader.
