Despite arriving amid a storm of controversy and a somewhat tumultuous production, OG Scream writer Kevin Williamson’s first spin in the slasher’s directorial hotseat, Scream 7, proved a bona fide box office hit earlier this year, landing as the meta horror franchise’s most successful instalment yet by a vigorous $40 million margin. A Scream 8 announcement swiftly and dutifully followed, with sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face) attached to pen the Ghostface eightquel. Now, in a not-at-all shocking development, the series’ iconic Final Girl, Neve Campbell, has confirmed her Sidney Prescott will return in the saga’s next entry.

Speaking to the Associated Press this evening, Campbell — whose latest project, Black Doves Season 2, hits Netflix this week — offered a low but sweet update on where things are at with the forthcoming, currently directorless next Scream movie. “Scream 8; that’s in the pipeline as well,” said Campbell when asked about upcoming work on her horizons, before playfully adding, “You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8, but I’ll be in it.” With the Williamson and Guy Busick penned Scream 7 having brought Campbell’s fan-beloved Sid back into the Scream fold some 15 years after her last proper appearance in 2011’s Scream 4, and Sid having just about survived Ghostface’s latest reign of terror along with daughter Tatum (Isabel May) and husband Mark (Joel McHale), Neve Campbell’s Scream 8 return was all but guaranteed anyway. Still, it’s nice to have confirmation from the definitive source on all things Sidney Prescott all the same.

At this stage, Scream 8 has neither a director nor a release date, no confirmed cast list, and no set-in-stone production timeline to speak of. What it does have however is the word ‘Scream’ in the title, a couple of very talented writers on board, the perennial appeal of one (well, usually several) Ghostface Killer(s), and now the promise of a further murderous misadventure spearheaded by Neve Campbell. And for a great, great many, that’ll be the opening night ticket sold already. Here’s hoping that eighth time around ol’ Ghosty can deliver another scream, and not just another, well, Scream.
