Sony Pictures has acquired North America and select territories on the Michelle Yeoh action thriller The Surgeon, prevailing in what the studio said was a competitive situation following the world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The studio has also acquired rights in Latin America, Italy, China and Hong Kong on Roshan Sethi’s story about a surgeon who fights back after she is abducted and forced to operate on a mysterious patient.
Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov, and Joseph Mydell round out the key cast on the feature from Thunder Road and Tango.
The Surgeon premiered in TIFF’s Centrepiece programme and went into Toronto with North America and several outstanding territories remaining after Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 pre-sold the bulk of territories starting in Cannes last year.
Producers are Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Diarmaid McGrath of Thunder Road, Tango’s Tim Headington, Lia Buman, Tango’s Neil Shah, Steve Klinsky, Adam Kolbrenner of Lit Entertainment Group, John Schoenfelder, and Russell Ackerman.
Theresa Page, Kim Szarzynski, Michelle Yeoh, 193’s Wachsberger and Ashley Stern, Mahal Sourgose, Eric Harbert, Jay Schuminsky, Patrick White, David Martin, Macdara Kelleher, Eoin Egan, Cáit Collins, and Andrew Schwartzberg served as executive producers.
Sethi previously directed the 2024 SXSW and BFI London Film Festival romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy and is also a practicing radiation oncologist at a Boston hospital.
Joe Matukewicz, president of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Virginia Longmuir, EVP business affairs, and Elan Kovo, VP business development & FP&A, negotiated the deal with WME and 193 on behalf of the filmmakers.
