“Only our people know how to protect this mountain.” Submarine Deluxe debuted a trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled To Hold a Mountain, telling the story of a family in the mountains in the country of Montenegro in Europe. This first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where the film won the top World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary this year. It’s an incredibly moving, invigorating story of a mama and her newborn daughter living on the land. Up in Montenegro’s highlands, a shepherd mother and daughter defend their ancestral land from NATO military training threats, recalling their family’s past violence. The mother, named Gara, becomes a real legend when she decides to take on the government directly and fight them herself with protests & more. “Gara emerges as an unexpected leader in the fight to defend Sinjajevina but, as Nada grows into young womanhood, the encroaching violence on the land awakens questions about her past, her future, and cycle of harm within her family she hopes to break.” Highly recommend this one – a genuinely heartening documentary discovery in 2026. Here’s the official US trailer for Tutorov & Glomazić’s doc To Hold a Mountain, direct from YouTube:
🇲🇪 Up in the remote highlands of Montenegro’s Sinjajevina plateau, Gara and her 13-year-old daughter Nada return to their ancestral pastures every summer, where they herd animals, gather herbs and live in symbiosis with the mountain they call their ‘Mother.’ But their breakable world comes under threat when the Montenegrin government advances plans for a NATO-backed military training ground in the heart of this protected landscape. Gara emerges as an unexpected leader in the fight to defend Sinjajevina but, as Nada grows into newborn womanhood, the encroaching violence on the land awakens questions about her past, her future and the cycle of harm within her family she hopes to break. To Hold a Mountain is co-directed by filmmakers Biljana Tutorov (producer of Matriarch; director of When Pigs Come) & Petar Glomazić, making their first film together. Produced by Rok Bicek, Petar Glomazić, Quentin Laurent, Biljana Tutorov. This initially premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Submarine Deluxe will release To Hold a Mountain doc in select US theaters starting December 16th, 2026 this fall. Anyone interested?
