There’s no argument that Tom Cruise is one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood. Cruise has appeared in many films throughout his career, making a cameo in Austin Powers: Goldmember, starring in science fiction projects like Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow, and headlining 2017’s The Mummy, which almost kick-started Universal’s Dark Universe. But aside from these projects, Cruise also led two major film franchises, and one of them made a streaming comeback.

Are the ‘Top Gun’ Films Worth Watching?
The Top Gun films generated over $1.8 billion in total, with the sequel pulling in the most at $1.496 billion. Both films were highly praised by audiences, with Top Gun earning an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its sequel earned a near-perfect 99%. But critics favored Top Gun: Maverick, giving it a 96% score, while the 1986 feature scored 56%.
What made Top Gun: Maverick more appealing than its predecessor was that critics argued the first film felt like “an advertisement for the current American dream,” was full of “clichés, in plot and dialogue,” and was just a “recruitment poster.” Meanwhile, its sequel managed to “add depth and dimension” to its predecessor and set a “new standard in the era of reboots,” as it’s seen as more than just a nostalgia sequel.
Ross Bonaime gave Top Gun: Maverick an “A” rating in his review. He described the first film as “two hours of machismo, sweaty showoffs, and toxic personalities, centered around a careless character,” but its sequel showcases Maverick’s character development years later, as someone who’s now putting himself before everyone else while still living up to his name. He also notes that the sequel balances paying homage to its predecessor while telling a recent story.
