Over the years, there’s been no shortage of attempts to recreate the magic of Hanna-Barbera’s Stone Age sitcom The Flintstones, with a brace of ill-fated live-action movies and non-starter projects from Will Ferrell, Seth MacFarlane, and Elizabeth Warren having all sought to bring the Rubbles back to the proverbial Ritz to no avail. But now, in an intriguing development, Deadline is reporting that Canadian national treasure and certified Kenergy haver Ryan Gosling is in early development on a fresh live-action Flintstones reboot movie with his producing partner Jessie Henderson at Warner Bros. But this trip to Bedrock won’t be just another adventure with Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty. This one’s about a grown-up Bamm-Bamm Rubble.
First introduced as Barney and Betty Rubble’s adoptive club-swinging tot in the original Flintstones cartoon, Bamm-Bamm Rubble was mostly known for shouting “Bamm, Bamm!” and having freakishly outsized strength for such a petite kid in the OG show. Character development eventually came in the form of The Pebbles And Bamm-Bamm Show, which found a now-teenage Bamm-Bamm cruising about in a prehistoric dune buggy, rocking out with his band, The Bedrock Rockers, dating next-door neighbour Pebbles, and navigating the world of adolescence at Bedrock High School. Which direction Gosling is looking to head in with this fresh take on Bamm-Bamm is unclear right now, but with his own Barbie having recently gone down the meta, irreverent route to great effect, it seems unlikely his Rubble Jr. movie will be a straight-laced adaptation of any existing material.
While there’s no news yet on who’ll direct, star in, or even write this Flintstones reboot just yet (Deadline reports that Gosling and Henderson are searching for a scribe as we speak), there’s plenty to keep Gosling occupied in the meantime. Coming off the back of the amaze, amaze, amaze Project Hail Mary, RG already has Star Wars: Starfighter coming up next May and the petite matter of a Blazing debut as the MCU’s Ghost Rider to look forward to in 2028. We’ll bring you more on all things Bamm-Bamm just as soon as we get it though… hopefully the movie will rock. (Sorry not sorry.)
