In another record for Sony Pictures’ smash, Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed $500m at the North American box office on Thursday (August 6) in an industry-first seven days.
Daniel Destin Cretton’s tentpole starring Tom Holland and Zendaya also recorded the highest-grossing first week of release on an estimated $508.7m.
The modern high-water mark for fastest to $500m eclipses the eight-day record established by Avengers: Endgame in April 2019. The latest Spidey instalment has beaten its Marvel Studios stablemate over several records including the $169.8m biggest opening day, and the $360m biggest opening weekend.
Endgame still ranks as the fastest Hollywood tentpole to reach $1bn at the global box office, which it accomplished in five days, compared to Spider-Man: Brand New Day on six.
Heading into the second weekend Spider-Man: Brand New Day will almost certainly retain the top spot given that there are no modern heavyweight releases and The Odyssey is entering its fourth weekend.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens holds the second-weekend record on $149.2m from December 2015, and is also the highest-grossing film of all time at the North American box office on $936.7m.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently ranks as the 22nd highest-grossing film of all time and will break into the top 10 when it overtakes 2015’s Jurassic World on $653.4m.
The latest instalment’s remarkable success has been attributed in vast part not just to its quality – it carries a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating and an A CinemaScore – but that fact that Sony has not overwhelmed franchise fans with a rapid conveyor belt of sequels. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first entry in the series since No Way Home, which opened nearly five years ago and finished its box office run on $814.9m.
