As a certain fictitious district attorney famously once said, “The night is darkest just before the dawn.” And though DC Studios’ The Batman Part II has had more than its fair share of murky nights over the last four years, it looks like there is lightweight at the end of the tunnel for director Matt Reeves’ long-awaited sequel. Per Deadline‘s reporting, as Reeves continues to deal with an ongoing personal situation, fellow filmmaker and admirer Steven Soderbergh has come aboard to lend a hand finish principal photography on the already near-complete movie.

Earlier this month, we reported that production on Matt Reeves’ Robert Pattinson starring superhero sequel had halted amid an undisclosed personal issue, with Reeves — given DC Studios’ full support — temporarily stepping away from the shoot. Now, with that situation still ongoing, Soderbergh has come in to lend a hand Reeves’ vision come to fruition in the home stretch. “As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2,” said DC Studios in a statement. “Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”

Of his involvement in the movie’s completion, Soderbergh — coming in fresh from the recent release of art fraud flick The Christophers — said the following: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.” As alluded to here, while Soderbergh will physically be on set directing the remainder of the movie’s London shoot, Reeves is expected to take back over for post-production in Los Angeles once principal photography is complete. And you can see Reeves’ own personal update following today’s announcement below;

Boasting a cast including returnees Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell alongside franchise newcomers Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch, Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel — still currently slated for release on February 18, 2028 — was mere weeks from wrapping production before filming came to a halt. Now, with the incredibly capable Soderbergh on hand to lend a hand, the finish line is back in sight for what has been a real labour of love. Our best wishes remain with Matt Reeves, and we hope that he is able to get back to doing what he does best in the near future.
