Pegah Ahangarani’s Rehearsals For A Revolution has been selected as the UK’s entry for the best international feature category at the 2027 Oscars.

The film was chosen by the UK selection committee, which is composed of members or representatives of Bafta’s film committee.

Rehearsals For A Revolution had its world premiere in the Special Screenings section at Cannes Film Festival this year, where it won the L’Oeil d’or award for best documentary across the festival’s sections.

In the film, Ahangarani traces her life and over 40 years of Iranian history through five portraits of relatives and mentors.

London-based Ahangarani wrote, researched and edited the film in the UK over more than two and a half years. Co-writers on the film include Ehsan Abdipour, Amir Ahmadi Arian, Arash Ashtiani and Majed Neisi. It is produced by Kaveh Farnam for the Czech Republic’s Media Nest and Adria Mones for Spain’s Fasten Films.

Sony held a confined release for the film in the UK and Ireland on September 25. Sony Pictures Classics will start Oscar-qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles in December, before opening in one venue in each city from January 8, 2027 ahead of a national US rollout in the following weeks.

The UK won its first Oscar in the best international feature category in 2024, for Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone Of Interest. It secured nominations in 1994 for Hedd Wyn and 2000 for Solomon & Gaenor, from 22 previous entries, while Sandhya Suri’s Santosh made the shortlist for the 2025 award.

Submissions for next year’s award closed on September 30, although confirmation of some submitted titles typically comes through over the following weeks before the Academy releases the full list.
