Emma Mackey and Jamie Lee Curtis are both actors who know a thing or two about navigating toxic families in their work. Mackey deals with a trauma-stricken, alcoholic mother as Sex Education‘s Maeve Wiley; JLC is a trauma-stricken, alcoholic mother in Disney+ ‘comedy’ The Bear. And if the first trailer for James L. Brooks’ upcoming Ella McCay — a comedy about a lawyer (Mackey) struggling to balance her personal and professional life — is anything to go by, then it looks like the filmmaker’s first movie since How Do You Know? some 15 years ago will see the duo dealing with another effed-up family — albeit with space for a good few laughs along the way. Check it out below;

Marge Simpson on narration? Woody Harrelson as the estranged father of Mackey’s McCay? JLC and Mackey having a straight-up scream off as on-screen auntie and niece? Okay, count us in — this certainly looks to be more As Good As It Gets James L. Brooks than How Do You Know? James L. Brooks, with the legendary filmmaker and Simpsons co-creator digging deep for another grand cinematic symposium on life, all centred around Ella McCay and her attempts to succeed as newly appointed governor of her state while keeping everything locked down with her cluttered family at home. And what a brilliant cast Brooks has assembled for said chaos! Beyond the headlining trio of Mackey, JLC, and Harrelson, we’re getting Curtis’ fellow The Bear alum Ayo Edebiri, Slow Horses star Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Rebecca Hall, and Oscar nominee Albert Brooks.

Can Mackey’s McCay find a way to work through her pent-up rage? Will she be holding hands with Woody Harrelson and Jamie Lee Curtis and singing ‘Kumbaya’ by the final reel? And will Ayo Edebiri ever star in anything in which her every line delivery isn’t instantly iconic? We’ll let you know when Ella McCay hits cinemas on 12 December, which is a little way off just yet, but also we fear still not long enough for us to not trip over on the similarity between its star and lead character’s names. Ella Mackey is Emma McCay. Emma McCay is Ella Mackey. Emma Mackey is Ella McCay…
