This is shaping up to be quite the year for Robert Pattinson. Hot off the heels of The Drama, he gave perhaps the line delivery of the year in The Odyssey with his spirited reading of: “Somebody get these beggars outta here!” And before we see him enter the Dune-iverse in Part Three this December, we have another major performance from the star to look forward to: Primetime casts him as Chris Hansen, the man behind ‘00s reality TV series To Catch A Predator, in which Hansen and his team aimed to find and confront adults soliciting youngsters over the internet in televised stings. The film comes from director Lance Oppenheim, and has an arresting trailer – check it out here:
This looks like a lively and intense portrait not just of Hansen’s show, but of Hansen himself – depicted here as a man who sets out to do something good, but who also asserted himself as a sort of judge, jury and executioner (on a holy mission, even), and presented it all under the guise of entertainment TV. Oppenheim seems to be bringing an almost psychedelic visual style to the whole thing too, which will be familiar to those who’ve seen his documentaries like Ren Faire and Some Kind Of Heaven. Primetime marks his narrative feature film debut, also boasting Ari Aster as a producer. And beyond Pattinson, the film’s cast includes the likes of Merrit Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and Phoebe Bridgers. It’s scripted by Ajon Singh, based on Luke Dittrich’s 2007 Esquire article, ‘Tonight On Dateline This Man Will Die’.
Here’s a poster, too:
If this shot up your list of must-see movies for the back half of 2026, there’s good news – first reactions to Primetime will be coming out of the Venice Film Festival in September, while audiences in the US will get to see it on September 25. A24 will be distributing it in UK cinemas this Autumn, so stay tuned for a specific date.
