Principal photography has begun on Oscar-winning Polish filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski’s 1949, with shooting taking place in Poland, Germany and Italy, and The Match Factory handling sales.

Set at the height of the Cold War, 1949 centres on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his actress, journalist and rally driver daughter Erika, played by Sandra Hüller, as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins. Their journey takes them from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar.

August Diehl, Anna Madeley, Devid Striesow and Theo Trebs also star.

Producers are Mubi, Our Films’ Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli (Italy), Extreme Emotions’ Ewa Puszczynska (Poland), Nine Hours’ Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger (Germany), Chapter 2’s Dimitri Rassam (France) and Circle One’s Lorenzo Gangarossa (Italy). Our Films and Chapter 2 are both owned by Mediawan.

Earlier this year, Mubi signed a three-year co-production, financing and distribution agreement with Our Films. Under the terms of the agreement, Mubi will finance a slate of novel projects produced by Our Films, while Our Films will contribute additional equity investment. Mubi will also distribute the co-produced titles in key territories, while The Match Factory handles worldwide sales on the titles under the partnership.

The film is a continuation of his exploration of the moral confusion of post-Second World War Europe, as examined in Oscar-winning Ida and Oscar-nominated Cannes Competition title Cold War. Pawlikowski co-wrote the adaptation with Henk Handloegten.
