Put on your dancing shoes because Pennywise the Dancing Clown is back! That’s right, folks. Just in time for the spooky season, HBO has unveiled a brand-new look at its upcoming prequel series, IT: Welcome to Derry, which will see Bill Skarsgård reprise the role of the terrifying demonic entity known as Pennywise. Telling a completely different story from the pages of the Stephen King novel that started it all, the series turns the clocks back to a time long before The Losers’ Club traded punches with the shape-shifting fear eater. Set for a release on Sunday, October 26, the eight-episode series is bound to be yet another hit adaptation from the horror master’s collection.
Taking us back to the groovy year of 1962, the official trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry returns to the bustling streets of the titular town and slowly introduces us to the modern characters who are in for one hell of a time. A modern family has just relocated from their life on an army base to the minuscule and still town and are having a hard time adjusting to their modern surroundings. Meanwhile, a modern group of kids is sniffing around for answers after bizarre disappearances begin to hold the town hostage to an unknown face in the night. As we walk into the sewers alongside our youthful protagonists, a shadowy figure holding a red balloon steps out into the moonlight, giving us our first official look at Skarsgård’s return to the character that terrified so many.
Perhaps even more electrifying than seeing Skarsgård back in the facepaint and dazzling red wig, are the multitude of connections that the latest IT: Welcome to Derry trailer makes to King’s multiverse. From tiny nods like a Shawshank State Penitentiary bus full of prisoners to a better fleshing out of how The Shining’s Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) will fit into the story, the teaser is filled with one Easter egg after the other. To be fair, we’d expect nothing less from Andy Muschietti, who, after knocking his It film series out of the park, joins the prequel series as a co-creator alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs.
Meet the Cast Behind ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’
Joining the call sheet to tell the latest story from King’s sprawling catalogue is a lineup that includes Taylour Paige (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Jovan Adepo (Babylon), James Remar (Dexter: Resurrection), Madeleine Stowe (The Last of the Mohicans), Stephen Rider (Luke Cage), Rudy Mancuso (Música) and more.
