In addition to pop superstardom, Ariana Grande has carved out an impressive acting career. In fact, she began her career as an actor on Nickelodeon sitcoms like Victorious and Sam and Cat. She concentrated on her musical career for some time to great success, but in recent years, she’s turned back to the screen, with two acclaimed turns as Galinda/Glinda in Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good.

It’s been a while since she’s turned up on the diminutive screen in a major capacity, however. She was one of the leads in the first season of the Ryan Murphy slasher comedy Scream Queens a decade ago, and she was set to return to both the horror genre and Murphy’s ever-growing stable of actors. It now appears that it was not meant to be.

According to reports, Grande will no longer be appearing in the upcoming 13th season of American Horror Story. The multi-hyphenate’s Eternal Sunshine Tour is currently in progress, and Grande was unable to accommodate both the tour and American Horror Story’s filming into her busy schedule. Grande left the production before filming commenced; it is currently unclear if her part will be recast, or simply written out.

What Do We Know About Season 13 of ‘American Horror Story’?

Murphy’s unkillable horror anthology series will carry on, with or without Grande, for its unlucky 13th season. A haunted house full of actors from previous seasons are set to star, with many reprising their former characters. That includes John Carroll Lynch as the grotesque Twisty the Clown, Angela Bassett as voodoo queen Marie Laveau, Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe as aspiring witches Madison and Queenie, Sarah Paulson as senior sorceress Cordelia Goode, and many more, including Murphy regulars Jessica Lange, Paul Anthony Kelly, Kathy Bates, and John Waters.

Grande does still have a major acting project in the cards; she’ll star alongside Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, and a bevy of returning Meet the Parents stars in the comedy sequel Focker-in-Law. She’ll play an FBI negotiator who’s the bride-to-be of Henry Focker (Skyler Gisondo). It is set to hit theaters on November 25.

Season 13 of American Horror Story will premiere on September 24 on FX and Hulu. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
