Do you ever wear yours that way too?
Sometimes. With bigger watches, I don’t because they feel more solid there at the wrist. But sometimes, if it’s a smaller thing, I’ll wear them inside.
Are you a sentimental person when it comes to objects?
Yeah, yeah. So many things. You?
I have a little Oscar statuette I won for my English class adaptation of The Odyssey.
Wow. Are you excited about the recent Odyssey film that’s coming out?
I’m very excited.
Mine is this little talisman that Patti Smith gave me, and I’ll keep that forever.
How did that happen?
We just bonded, and she sort of gave it to me. With all the travel that we do, it’s nice to have something to hold on to—like a connection to something deeper, you know?
What do you think a watch tells you about the person wearing it?
A watch is like how someone chooses their clothing or shoes. It’s a sense of taste. It’s such an individual thing that someone resonates with.
So, you’ve got Miami Vice coming up. Are you looking forward to it?
So much. I’m looking forward to working with Michael [B. Jordan] and Joseph Kosinski. I’ve been a fan of both of theirs for a long time, and I feel very grateful that we get to go on that journey.
Julian Ungano
You and Michael were paired together, alongside Paul Mescal, for the Vanity Fair Hollywood cover. Are you excited to be reuniting with him?
Very much so. Just getting to work with somebody who’s not only a kind human being, but incredibly talented and hardworking. I’m very excited for the process.
And now he’s an Oscar winner.
I’m so ecstatic for him.
It’s been a crazy week here in New York. Have you been keeping up with the sports this summer?
