Prepare for a reality check: Captain America: Civil War is 10 years aged. Which, as well as causing several existential crises, also means that it’s been 10 years of the ultimate debate: Team Cap, or Team Tony? The Russos’ Winter Soldier follow-up saw the Avengers split over a key issue: whether or not the team should be overseen governmentally and sign the ‘Sokovia Accords’ (Tony says yes), or if they should operate independently (so says Cap). And among it all swirls an uncomfortable truth: Cap’s best friend Bucky – aka sleeper-agent assassin the Winter Soldier, who he’s spent many films defending – was the one who personally killed Tony’s parents. Ouch.
It’s a tough quandary, both personal and political – and now, Chris Evans has revisited the debate with a surprising result. Asked about his stance on the official Countdown To Avengers: Doomsday podcast, co-hosted by Ms. Marvel herself, Iman Vellani, Evans confessed: “You know, as the character I stand by Team Cap’s position. Me, personally? You know, I might be Team Iron Man. I know that’s probably controversial to say, but I see where he was coming from.” Cue none other than Robert Downey Jr. himself coming in for a huge. Eeshk, who’s going to tell Sebastian Stan?
We’ll see both Downey and Evans return in Avengers: Doomsday – this time with Downey as Victor Von Doom, and Evans (seemingly) reprising his role as Steve Rogers. Stay tuned to see if Cap’s allegiances are in for another shift going forwards. Doomsday comes to cinemas from December 18.
