“Maria is a true net positive in this world.” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a biopic documentary film titled Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story, a story about the life & jokes of comedian and actor Maria Bamford. The doc originally premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This is one of four up-to-date major docs about comedy and iconic comedians that Netflix is releasing this fall – along with: Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, Who Is Martin Mull?, and SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of. Since the 1990s, Maria Bamford has built a career on turning radical honesty into radical comedy. In this doc, co-directors Judd Apatow & Neil Berkeley trace the comedian’s path — and pathos — from her childhood in Duluth, MN, to her hard-won fame in Los Angeles and her present-day life, showing how Bamford’s mental health journey and her family relationships shaped her art and career. This looks like an unconventional documentary about a totally unconventional comedian. Should be a good one.

Maria Bamford has built a career on turning radical honesty into radical comedy — often blurring the line between performance and personal crisis. In this doc film, co-directors Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley trace her path from a childhood in Duluth, MN, through discovering a love of performance in college, to hard-won fame in Los Angeles while closely following her present day life for almost four years. The film also features hilarious clips from her stand-up specials & testimonials from fellow comedians who admire her singular voice, the film doesn’t shy away from the harder material: Bamford’s mental health journey and pivotal family relationships that shaped her along the way. The result is a portrait that’s as humorous as it is tender, capturing an artist who has made her own career of finding laughter inside the hardest truths.
Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story is co-directed by filmmakers Judd Apatow (of the docs Mel Brooks: 99 Year Old Man, George Carlin’s American Dream, Norm: The Tale of Norm MacDonald) & Neil Berkeley (director of Harmontown, Gilbert, Group Therapy, and “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night”). Produced by Judd Apatow, Neil Berkeley, Amanda Rohlke, David Heiman. Netflix will debut Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story doc streaming on Netflix globally starting October 23rd, 2026 this fall.
