The annals of cinema history are littered with great movies whose sequels we’re still waiting on. The Nice Guys, Edge Of Tomorrow, The Adventures Of Tintin, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed… the list goes on. But one recent example that still stings is Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s 2023 banger Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves — a star-studded, rollicking fantasy blockbuster that capitalised on a recent years D&D boom and seemed nailed-on for the sequel treatment when it first released. But now, after years of crickets, we do have an update on 2 Dungeons, 2 Dragons (as nobody is calling it)… and it’s a real good news, bad news situation.
First, the good news. Over the weekend, co-writer/director Jonathan Goldstein offered a status update on a potential D&D sequel while promoting his and John Francis Daley’s upcoming Apple TV movie Mayday at San Diego Comic-Con. Speaking with Screen Rant‘s Ash Crossan, Goldstein confirmed that an Honour Among Thieves sequel script does exist. “We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons And Dragons,” shared Goldstein. “We were hired to write it,” he continued, going on to later state, “we love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.” So far so great, right? Well, this is where the bad news comes in. While a script is there, the money for more big-screen D&D shenanigans isn’t… at least not yet. “I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons,” said Goldstein. “They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it.”
Despite being a critical and commercial success, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves struggled somewhat to find its footing at the box office, taking a respectable yet underwhelming $208.2 million against a reported budget of $150 million. But with the D&D revival still ongoing thanks to the likes of Stranger Things, Critical Role, and Baldur’s Gate 3, with Baldur’s Gate set to get the HBO treatment before long and Shawn Levy’s The Forgotten Realms heading for Netflix, hope springs eternal that we’ll see Edgin, Holga, and our beloved Jarnathan again someday. Roll a D20 for persuasion with advantage…
